Rising Together: Humanizing Education in an Age of Innovation

As education continues to evolve through technological innovation and changing learner needs, our responsibility is to ensure that people remain at the heart of our work. Drawing on social justice and multicultural education frameworks, and a deep commitment to student success, Dr. Rowena Tomaneng will reflect on the future of teaching, learning, research, and technology through the lens of humanizing education. This talk will encourage English language educators in K–12 and higher education to strengthen inclusive practices, support multilingual learners, and lead with purpose in a changing educational landscape.

Rising Together Through Reflective Practice

Gaining teaching experience as a language teacher is not enough to provide automatic professional development, for we do not learn much from experience as much as we learn from reflecting on that experience. Reflective practice generally means that language teachers take the responsibility of examining their professional practice, by systematically collecting evidence about their beliefs and practices both inside and outside the classroom so that they can not only improve the quality of their instruction but also provide better opportunities for their students to learn. Thus, experience combined with systematic reflection can lead to professional growth so that we can become more effective teachers. In this plenary address I outline how teachers can rise together through reflection so that they will be empowered throughout their teaching careers.
