PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

computer-assisted instruction and familiarity with online platforms; familiarity with
non-credit ESL programs; participation in professional organizations such as CATESOL and
TESOL; evidence of sensitivity to and understanding of the socio-economic, academic,
cultural and ethnic diversity within the community college student population including
students with physical and/or learning disabilities as these factors relate to differences
in learning style.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
Appointment subject to verification of official transcripts, current or previous

SELECTION PROCESS
The selection process shall include the following steps:
(a) A screening/evaluation committee will review application materials to determine minimum
qualifications for the position are met;
(b) A pool of qualifying candidates will be invited to an initial interview with the
selection committee at the Santa Monica Community College District’s main campus or one
of its satellite campuses;
(c) Upon completion of initial interview process, the selection committee will recommend
candidates for final interview with the Superintendent/President who will recommend a
candidate for appointment by the Board of Trustees.
Applicants will be notified by letter of their status as the committee progresses through
the hiring process. Candidates who are selected for a final interview with the
Superintendent/President should not expect official notification of the status of candidacy
until the Board of Trustees has acted upon the Superintendent/President’s recommendation.
All travel costs related to an initial interview will be borne by the candidate. Only ½ of

* Demonstrated course work and/or conversational fluency in a foreign language.
* Knowledge of and ability to integrate computer technology in the classroom and through
distance delivery modes, as appropriate.
Summary of Duties and Responsibilities:
Instruct advanced ESL writing and advanced ESL academic skills classes. Instruct other
levels and skills of ESL, as needed. Serve as a liaison between the ESL department and the
English Composition Department. Department chair duties, in rotation with other faculty.
Assist in curriculum and program development including committee work. Participate in
assessment and placement activities, including holistic scoring of writing samples, test
validation, student learning outcome research. Initiate and/or participate in special
projects and grants. Assignment may include day or evening hours and may include
assignments in a lab or center as needed. Participate in general faculty functions related
to the education program and in-service programs. Maintain currency in discipline.

Selection Procedure
A screening committee will review application materials which are complete and received by

Compensation and Employment requirements
Full-time faculty are paid on the Academic Salary Schedule (see Wages for salary placement
criteria in Academic Employee Master Agreement located under Contracts on the District
website).
Federal law requires every new employee to present documentation showing eligibility to
work in the U.S. SOCCCD does not sponsor employment Visas.
